A motorcyclist was killed and three others injured when miscreants used a trap to carry out a robbery on the Cox’s Bazar-Chattogram Highway in Chakaria.

The attack occurred around 12:30am on Friday near Malumghat area, south of a local army camp.

According to Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhidul Anwar, a group of armed assailants stretched a rope across the road from both sides and trapped two motorcycles carrying four individuals traveling from Cox’s Bazar to Chattogram.

The deceased was identified as Mahmudul Haque Riyad, 26, a resident of Balukhali in Ukhiya upazila. The injured are Md Sagar, 28, and Nurul Hossain from Balukhali, and Abu Raihan, 25 from Eidgaon.

Sources said the victims were going to Chattogram when the robbers struck. A doctor at Chakaria Upazila Health Complex confirmed that Riyad had died before reaching the hospital. Two of the injured were given initial treatment and later referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for advanced care.

Tragedy has deepened for Riyad’s family, as his wife passed away just 22 days ago. The couple leaves behind two children. Their untimely deaths have cast a pall of mourning over their community in Ukhiya.
