Bangladesh’s fragile batting display against Sri Lanka has raised alarm bells, but the Bangladesh team management remains optimistic about progressing to the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. Spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed has voiced his belief that the side still has a chance, provided the players maintain their focus.
“We are still confident about reaching the Super Four. You must keep believing. It is difficult, but the players have to stay strong and concentrate on the next match,” said Mushtaq.
Bangladesh’s spin attack has not fared poorly, although it has lagged behind Afghanistan’s highly experienced slow bowlers. Mushtaq noted the importance of counter-attacking against Afghan spin and emphasised the role of the middle order. “If we can counter-attack their spinners and score runs, it will help us. The middle order is crucial. Rishad tries too many things at times, and that is when problems occur. He must focus on maintaining his line and length, and we need to discuss this with him.”
While Afghanistan boast spinners with greater experience, Mushtaq argued that Bangladesh’s slow bowlers have consistently delivered in the middle overs. “Statistically, our spinners have won more matches in the middle overs. Now they must deliver that on the field.”
Bangladesh’s preference for bowling first has also drawn scrutiny. The team chose to field after winning the toss in both of the first two matches of their recent T20 series against the Netherlands, prompting critics to suggest that more batting practice would have served better preparation for the Asia Cup.
Mushtaq defended the approach, insisting it reflects confidence in Bangladesh’s bowling strength. “Our bowling is strong, so naturally we prefer to field first.”
Another concern lies in experience. Afghan cricketers play more franchise tournaments around the world, giving them an edge in adaptability and pressure situations. Even so, Mushtaq believes Bangladesh have the capacity to challenge any side. “They play more franchise cricket, which is their strength. We also perform well at home. We must improve in ICC and ACC events. I believe Bangladesh have the ability to challenge any team.”
Mushtaq stressed that technical improvements alone will not be enough. A change in mentality, he said, is equally vital. “The mindset must change. Belief is key. If the players achieve that, this team can challenge anyone.”
