In a press release issued on Wednesday, BUET has condemned the police attack on engineering students who were marching towards the chief adviser’s residence at Jamuna on Wednesday to press for their demands.

The BUET administration expressed deep shock and anger over the incident, terming police’s response to the protests “unacceptable”.

The statement further urged the government to carry out a proper investigation and take swift action against those responsible for the attack.

Earlier on Wednesday, engineering students staged a blockade of Shahbagh intersection, beginning with a “Long March to Dhaka” with students from BUET and other institutions pressing for three demands, eventually leading to clashes with the police at the Hotel InterContinental intersection.

At least 60 students were injured and 8 members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the clashes, with both the Home Ministry and DMP issuing statements confirming the latter.

Since then, engineering students have continued their protests, rejecting the government-formed committee to deal with their demands, issuing a fresh 5-point demand, including an apology from the Ministry of Home Affairs Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and the dismissal District Commissioner Masud Alam.
