In protest of a “threat” to a fellow student, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) students created a blockade at Shahbag in the dead of night.

Eyewitnesses reported that after midnight on Tuesday, agitated students marched from the BUET campus to Shahbag. There, they blocked the road and staged a demonstration.

Later, they marched to the Hotel Intercontinental near the chief adviser’s Office, where they presented three demands.

During this time, the protesting students blocked roads on both sides and chanted various slogans. This halted traffic in the area for a considerable period.

It is alleged that earlier, regarding the diploma technicians’ quota issue, a diploma engineering student had “threatened” a student from the Electrical Department of BUET.

This incident prompted BUET students to take to the streets in protest. Their demands included swiftly bringing the ‘threat-makers’ under legal action, in addition to canceling the ninth and tenth-grade quotas for diploma engineers, recruiting based on merit, and refraining from using the title “Engineer” without a BSc degree.
