JCD picks Abidul, Hamim as VP, GS candidates for DUCSU polls

The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the BNP, has nominated Abidul Islam Khan and Tanvir Bari Hamim as vice-president and general secretary respectively for the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections.

Chhatra Dal Central Committee President Rakibul Islam Rakib announced the full panel at a press briefing on Wednesday noon at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla on the Dhaka University campus.

Abidul Islam Khan, joint general secretary of the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal and a student of the 2015–16 session in the Department of Islamic Studies, has been nominated for the vice-president post.

Tanvir Bari Hamim, convener of the Chhatra Dal unit at Kabi Jasim Uddin Hall and a student of the 2018–19 session in the Department of Women and Gender Studies, has been nominated for the general secretary post.

For the assistant general secretary (AGS) post, the organisation nominated Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed, convener of Bijoy Ekattor Hall Chhatra Dal and a student of the 2018–19 session in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism.

JCD leaders said the decision not to field a candidate for the research and publications secretary post was taken as a tribute to Tanvi, reflecting the spirit of the July movement.

The panel includes Ariful Islam as candidate for liberation war and democratic movements secretary, Ehsanul Islam for science and technology secretary, Chemon Faria Islam Meghla for common room, library and cafeteria secretary, Md Mehedi Hasan for international affairs secretary, Abu Hayat Md Zulfiqar Zisan for literature and culture secretary, Chim Chimya Chakma for sports secretary, Md Saif Ullah (Saif) for student transport secretary, Syed Imam Hasan Onik for social service secretary, Md Arkanul Islam Rupok for career development secretary, Anwar Hossain for health and environment secretary, and Md Mehedi Hasan Munna for human rights and law secretary.

In addition, the panel’s member candidates are Md Zarif Rahman, Mahmudul Hasan, Nahid Hasan, Md Hasibur Rahman Sakib, Md Shamim Rana, Yasin Arafat Alif, Munim Hasan Arup, Ranjan Roy, Sowaib Islam Omi, Meherunnesa Keya, Ibnu Ahmed, Samsul Haque Anan and Nityananda Pal.

Earlier on Monday, three prominent Chhatra Dal leaders collected forms for the Vice President (VP) post, while leaving their panel details yet to be finalised.

Among those were Dhaka University unit Joint General Secretary BM Kausar, Abidul Islam Khan, and the central committee’s Joint General Secretary Mominul Islam Jisan, all vying for the influential position of VP.
