Twelve more leaders and activists of the Awami League (AL) and its affiliated organisations have been arrested in the last 24 hours during separate drives in various parts of the capital in connection with different offences.
The operations were carried out by teams from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.
The arrested individuals include Md Habibur Rahman, former office secretary of Tejgaon Industrial Thana unit Awami League, Md Zahidul Islam Parvez, president of Ward-7, Noakhali Union Parishad Awami League, Md Mojibur Rahman, office secretary of Ward-12, Mirpur Awami League, Ziaul Haque Zia, central Jubo League member and former assistant secretary of Chhatra League, Md Kalim, vice-president of Nawab Katara Unit Jubo League, Habibur Rahman Uzzal, former general secretary of Kadamtoli Thana Sramik League, Md Redwan Khan Borhan, president of Chandpur District Awami Matsyajibi League, Sohanur Rahman, former organising secretary of central Chhatra League, Ataul Gani Kaushik, general secretary of Amar Ekushey Hall Chhatra League, Ershadur Rahman Rifat, former vice-president of central Chhatra League, Md Jahangir Alam, former mayor of Jibannagar Municipality and general secretary of Jibannagar Awami League, Chuadanga, Iqbal Hossain Palash, general secretary of Dhaka North Sramik League.
According to Mohammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, several DB teams made the arrests on August 4.
Habibur Rahman and Ziaul Haque Zia were apprehended by the DB Cyber Unit, Zahidul Islam Parvez and Mojibur Rahman were detained by the DB Ramna Division, Md Kalim was arrested by the DB Lalbagh Division, Habibur Rahman Uzzal was picked up from Fatullah by the DB Wari Division.
The official said that the arrestees were wanted in multiple criminal cases including, the July uprising cases.
