BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday cautioned against introducing unfamiliar political ideas without considering Bangladesh’s ground realities, warning that such moves could deepen the ongoing crisis.

Speaking at a memorial programme for former Swecchasebak Dal president Shafiul Bari Babu at the Jatiya Press Club, he criticised growing calls for proportional representation (PR), saying the model may not suit Bangladesh’s political landscape.

“Problems arise when new ideas are imposed without understanding the country’s realities,” Fakhrul said. “Some are bringing foreign concepts to solve domestic issues without knowing how this country functions.”

Citing the example of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), he said many voters are still unfamiliar with how to use them. “If people don’t understand EVMs yet, how will they comprehend the concept of proportional representation?”

He also took aim at some newly formed political parties for refusing to participate in elections unless PR is adopted. “This rigid approach won’t yield solutions,” he said.

Fakhrul emphasised the need for leadership rooted in national interest, saying, “We need leaders who are thinking about the future of Bangladesh, not their personal gain.”

Reflecting on the BNPs past struggles, he noted that party activists had shown resilience in the face of repression. “Many of our comrades sacrificed their lives during the July uprising and under the last regime. What is the value of their lives?”

He ended his remarks on an optimistic note, pointing to emerging political consensus. “Consensus among political parties has been reached on 12 fundamental issues. That’s a very good sign for the future.”

BNP leaders including Amanullah Aman and Khairul Kabir Khokon, as well as family members of Shafiul Bari Babu, attended the event.
