Students at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) have launched a vigorous movement demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Machusud, centering on a single-point demand.
At a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon, student representatives accused the VC of failing to ensure student safety and of resorting to repression. They declared his removal as their only demand.
Following the press statement, students broke the locks of six male dormitories and entered the halls. They also called for an impartial investigation under a newly appointed VC.
The unrest stems from a February 18 clash over a demand to ban student politics, which left more than 50 students injured. In the aftermath, the administration shut down the campus and imposed a ban on political activities. A case was filed against unnamed 400–500 individuals.
In a recent syndicate meeting, KUET authorities decided to expel 37 students accused of involvement in the February clash — a move that the protesting students have rejected. As part of their ongoing campaign, they launched the “Make KUET Free Again” movement.
Regarding the dormitory break-ins, the VC said the matter would be placed before the university syndicate for discussion.
