Sonargaon University (SU) students have won three national medals, including one silver and two bronze, at the Bangladesh National Round of the Fibonacci International Robot & STEM Olympiad 2026, earning recognition for their science, technology and robotics innovations. The achievement was secured by three teams from the university’s SU Innovation Hub at the competition held at United International University (UIU), where teams from 58 public and private universities competed, said a press release.
The winning teams have also created an opportunity to qualify for the World Championship in Rome, Italy, after competing in an international event featuring participation from more than 30 countries. The Fibonacci International Robot & STEM Olympiad is a global robotics and STEM competition that brings together innovators and students from around the world.
The StingRay Hunter-X team won a silver medal in the Blue Entrepreneurship category for its project, “Autonomous Underwater Robot With River Recovery & Rescue System”, featuring automatic underwater search, rescue and recovery capabilities. The team members are Md Junaid Ahmed (CE), Arafat Uz Zaman (ME), Ehsan Sajid (ME) and Rafsan Rahat (ME).
The SU Astro Nova team secured a bronze medal in the Robotic Entrepreneurship category for presenting the “Remote Autonomous Mine Detection & Defusion Robot Version 2” project, designed to remotely detect and deactivate landmines for military and security applications. The team members are Akram F Moni (ME), Rezaul Karim (ME), Fazle Rabbi (CE) and Arman (EEE).
The Robo Vend PRS team won another bronze medal in the Greentech Entrepreneurship category with its “Reverse Vending System” project, which aims to reduce plastic pollution and generate raw materials for the 3D printing industry. The team members are Arifuzzaman Hridoy (EEE), Khushi Akhter (BBA), Tanna Akhter (CSE), Noor Afridi Chowdhury (CE) and Tausif Ahmed (EEE).
Under the management of SU Innovation Hub, Sonargaon University students have won championships and runner-up positions in more than 20 national and international technology competitions over the past year, while the hub has received the Best Club award multiple times. The university currently has five robots developed using its own technology, including an underwater rescue robot and a firefighting robot, while the SU Mars Rover team is preparing a new version of its Mars Rover.
The university said its research and innovation-focused activities through SU Innovation Hub are supporting students’ practical experience in technology and robotics. The activities are led by Md Rais Uddin Molla, Head and Assistant Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Sonargaon University. Research and development activities are led by Nuruzzaman Rakib, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, while Dr H B Muhammad Zukaul Islam, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Department of Basic Science, serves as moderator.
