Two deer and a wild boar, struggling after being trapped in poachers’ snares, have been rescued and released back into the forest by patrolling forest guards.

On Monday, forest guards conducted an operation in Pasur River boundary and Kunchir Khal areas under Chandpai Range of the East Sundarbans.

During the drive, 148 “Doa” deer-hunting snares were recovered. However, no one could be arrested as the poaching gang fled after sensing the presence of the forest guards.

DFO Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said a team of forest guards led by Md Motiur Rahman, the officer-in-charge of the Zongra patrol post, was patrolling on foot.

At that time, they spotted two deer and a boar trapped in “Doa” snares set by poachers inside the forest. Later, they rescued the three animals from the snares and released them back into the forest.

The DFO further said that patrolling and drives by the forest department have been stepped up to stop the poaching of wildlife, particularly deer, in the Sundarbans.

Regular foot patrols are being conducted in various areas of the forest so that poachers cannot set traps and hunt wildlife. The recovered snares have been seized, and efforts are under way to identify those involved in wildlife killing and bring them to justice.
