Akash Das has taken oath as an executive member of Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) with 16 to 17 days remaining before the committee’s tenure expires.

On Tuesday, university Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Al-Forkan administered the oath to him. Cucsu General Secretary (GS) Sayed Bin Habib said Akash Das was administered the oath at 12pm on Tuesday.

Akash Das won executive member post in Cucsu election held on 15 October last year, contesting from Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed “Sampriti Shikharthi Jot” panel.

Following the publication of the gazette of Cucsu election winners on 21 October, the official swearing-in ceremony took place on 23 October.

However, facing criticism over a Facebook post on social media related to a rape incident, he did not attend the swearing-in ceremony.

The university administration formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter. The committee submitted its report to the university administration on 25 February this year after completing the investigation.

Subsequently, a decision to pardon Akash Das was taken at the 21st meeting of the university’s Board of Residence, Health and Discipline. Following that decision, he was given the opportunity to take the oath.

Regarding this, vice-chancellor said, “Akash Das is taking the oath today. The allegation against him has been investigated. It is better to administer the oath than not doing so at all.”

Notably, the Cucsu election was held on 15 October last year, and the current committee assumed office following swearing-in of the elected representatives on 23 October. Accordingly, 17 days remain in the tenure of the current committee.
