An indefinite transport strike called by the Habiganj Motor Owners Group began on Thursday morning, suspending bus services across all routes in the district.
The strike was enforced in protest against allegations that bus owners and transport workers in Moulvibazar blocked Habiganj-bound buses, vandalised vehicles, and physically assaulted workers.
According to the Habiganj Motor Owners Group, owners and workers in Moulvibazar obstructed Habiganj buses on the Habiganj–Moulvibazar–Sylhet route on 24 September.
During the incident, three buses belonging to Habiganj operators were detained in Moulvibazar and transport workers were assaulted.
As a result of the strike, bus operations on all routes from Habiganj have come to a complete standstill. Affected services include the Habiganj–Sylhet and Habiganj–Moulvibazar–Sylhet routes, as well as all internal district routes.
The disruption left passengers stranded at various bus stands for extended periods, with many forced to travel in alternative vehicles at higher fares to reach their destinations.
Abu Moin Chowdhury Sohel, General Secretary of the Habiganj Motor Owners Group, said that in line with previous decisions, the strike will continue until a clear resolution is achieved ensuring that Habiganj buses can operate without hindrance on the Habiganj–Moulvibazar–Sylhet route.
