Taylor Swift will make history at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards as the first recipient of the newly introduced Artist Director honour, recognising her work in music video direction and visual storytelling.
CBS and MTV announced the honour on 21 September, describing it as a new award for artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the creative possibilities of music videos and developed a distinctive directorial voice.
Swift, a 14-time Grammy winner, has earned seven VMA nominations for Best Direction and won the category four times. Her directing credits include music videos such as ‘The Fate of Ophelia’, ‘Opalite’ and ‘Anti-Hero’, alongside several other projects.
The 2026 VMAs will be hosted by Snoop Dogg and held in Los Angeles on 27 September. The ceremony will air live on CBS and MTV and stream on Paramount+ in the United States. International viewers will be able to watch it on MTV and Paramount+ the following day.
Swift has also won the Grammy for Album of the Year four times. Her latest album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, has set a new first-week sales record in the modern era, according to Billboard figures based on data from Luminate.
