The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Ramna Division has arrested a former leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League in connection with a cocktail blast in front of the Supreme Court’s main gate.
The arrestee was identified as Md Salman Islam Sakib, 23, also known as Asif, a former joint general secretary of the Motijheel thana unit of Chhatra League.
Police claimed that Sakib was directly involved in the blast.
The DMP disclosed the information in a press release on Monday.
According to the Detective Ramna Division, two people arrived on a motorcycle at the Supreme Court’s main gate at around 1:15pm on 15 September. They allegedly detonated a cocktail-like object and fled the scene.
Following the incident, detectives began analysing technological and intelligence data to identify those involved, the DMP said.
As part of the investigation, a team conducted a raid in the Motijheel area on Sunday and arrested Sakib. Police also seized the motorcycle allegedly used in the incident.
Based on information obtained during his initial interrogation, detectives conducted another operation in the Hazaribagh Beribadh area at around 2:30am, the DMP said.
Four unexploded objects like cocktails were recovered from the area, according to police.
A case has been filed with Shahbagh Police Station over the incident.
The Detective Ramna Division is continuing its efforts to identify and arrest others allegedly involved in the blast, the DMP said.
