A man allegedly killed his three children by mixing poison with their food in Sunamganj’s Tahirpur upazila early Saturday. After feeding them, he himself consumed poison.
The incident occurred early Saturday at Rajniline village in Borodol North Union of Tahirpur upazila, police said.
The deceased were Mawa, 10, Tamim, 7, and Shamim, 2.
Neighbours and relatives rescued the three children and their father, first taking them to a local physician at Badaghat Bazar and later to the Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex. Doctors there declared the three children dead.
Their father Sharafat was transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Sharafat’s wife lives in Saudi Arabia.
Fauzia, a physician at Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex’s emergency department, said Sharafat and his children were brought in around 7:20am. Examination revealed that the three children had died before arrival.
A local resident said Sharafat went to Borochhara Bazar with his three children and brought home biryani on the day of the incident. It is suspected he mixed poison into the biryani, fed it to his children, and ate it himself.
He added that Sharafat was addicted to gambling and drugs and misused the money his wife sent from abroad.
Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-charge Faruk Ahmed said the bodies of the children are currently at Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex. After inquest reports, they will be sent to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital morgue.
