Three people, including a woman, were killed in separate road accidents in Bogura on Monday, as one of the crashes occurred while relatives were returning home with the body of a family member.
The accidents took place in front of TMSS Medical College Hospital in the Tengamara area of Bogura city around 4:15am and in the Ranirhat area of Shajahanpur upazila around 10am.
The deceased were Shafiqul, 40, son of Majnu Member of Rampur village in Paikar union under Kahalu upazila; Arafat, 40, son of Jahangir Alam of the same area; and Khadija, 51, of Bandighi area in Kahalu.
According to locals, Ashraful, a resident of Paikar union, suffered a stroke late Sunday night.
His brother Nazrul, nephew Arafat, and neighbours Rafiqul and Sapikul, alias Shafiqul, were taking him to TMSS Medical College Hospital in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.
Around 4:15am, a night coach bus hit the CNG as it was entering the hospital premises and sped away. Shafiqul and Arafat died on the spot.
Ashraful, Rafiqul and Nazrul were injured and taken to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Relatives said Ashraful was later shifted to the ICU as his condition was critical.
Abdul Bashed, a member of Ward 6 of Paikar Union Parishad, said the victims were his relatives and neighbours.
“The three injured are undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Ashraful’s condition is critical and he is in the ICU,” he said.
In the other accident, Khadija, 51, was killed around 10am in Ranirhat.
Police said she was travelling in an ambulance carrying the body of a relative to Kahalu when the vehicle lost control and crashed into a bridge railing.
Khadija died on the spot.
Police recovered her body and sent it to the morgue of Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Ashik Iqbal, officer-in-charge of Shajahanpur Police Station, confirmed the incident.
Rais Uddin, in-charge of Kundarhat Highway Police Station, said authorities initially faced difficulties identifying the two men killed in the first accident as their relatives took the bodies home shortly after the crash.
He said their identities were later confirmed. The body of Khadija was kept at the hospital morgue, he added.
Legal proceedings in connection with the accidents are underway, police said.
