BNP Acting Secretary General and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed on Friday said staging a long march is a political and democratic right of the opposition, but urged opposition parties not to create a deliberate shutdown of the country in the name of political programmes.
He made the remarks while speaking at the induction ceremony of the newly elected executive committee of the Bangladesh Dance Artists Association at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital on Friday morning.
Referring to the ongoing gas and electricity crisis, Rizvi said the shortages had emerged due to the global situation and that the incumbent government should not be held responsible for them.
He called on opposition parties to put forward specific proposals if they had any for resolving the crisis.
“Instead of only taking to the streets, the opposition should present its plans to the people for resolving the crisis,” Rizvi said, urging political parties to speak the truth and refrain from creating confusion among the public.
The BNP leader also stressed the need for the opposition to play a constructive role in making Parliament effective.
He said the opposition should not only criticise the government on reasonable grounds but also place alternative proposals in Parliament to address national crises.
Rizvi urged opposition parties to demonstrate political responsibility by offering concrete solutions to the gas and electricity shortages instead of merely repeating the practices of the past.
