Bangladesh lost three quick wickets and went from 35/6 to 39/9 after lunch, as Australia continued to dominate the second Test at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the first to go, falling in the second over after the interval. The all-rounder attempted to drive Pat Cummins but edged the ball to Beau Webster at slip, departing for 11 from 51 balls.
His dismissal left Bangladesh at 36 for seven and brought an end to a brief recovery. Miraz and Hasan Mahmud had added 15 runs from 55 balls, while Taijul Islam came to the crease after Miraz’s departure.
Hasan could not stay for long either. He was caught by Nathan Lyon off Josh Hazlewood for eight from 35 balls, leaving Bangladesh eight wickets down for 38 runs.
Bangladesh had been under pressure from the start, with Mitchell Starc doing most of the damage in the opening session. The left-arm pacer claimed five wickets in just 22 balls as the visitors’ top order collapsed.
The resistance Bangladesh showed in the first Test in Darwin was missing in Mackay. With eight wickets down and only 38 runs on the board, Bangladesh were in danger of recording one of their lowest Test totals after the dismissal of Taskin Ahmed as the ninth batter.
