A 32-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of theft in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna early Monday.
The deceased, identified as Manik Hossain, also known as Suman, was a resident of Mahadebpur Azizoltala village under Sahapur union.
According to police and local sources, the incident occurred around 3am in Mistripara Thandatala village. The shop owner, Habibul Mondol, stated that Manik had entered his grocery shop with the intention to commit theft. Habibul, who lives adjacent to the shop, went outside to confront the man after hearing a noise.
Manik allegedly attacked Habibul with a sharp weapon, causing injuries to his hand and back. When Habibul’s two sons rushed to the scene after hearing their father’s screams, the suspect attacked and injured them as well.
Upon witnessing the assault, local residents detained Manik and subjected him to a mass beating, resulting in his death at the scene.
Habibul and his two sons are currently receiving treatment at the Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex.
Asadur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station, confirmed the incident and stated that the body has been sent to the Pabna General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. He added that legal action would be taken following a thorough investigation into the matter.
