The 11-party alliance has called for a mass rally at Paltan in Dhaka on 5 August to demand the implementation of referendum mandate regarding July Charter, and to protest against what they termed “partisan government appointments.”
The programme was announced by Hamidur Rahman Azad, the alliance coordinator and assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, during a press conference on Thursday night.
The announcement followed a meeting held at the Leader of the Opposition’s residence on Minto Road in the capital.
During the briefing, Azad stated that the government had campaigned for a “Yes” vote in favour of the July Charter prior to the elections, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman personally seeking public support.
He added that although the people delivered a mandate for the charter’s implementation, the government is now disregarding that verdict and failing to fulfil its promises.
Azad further alleged that the government has recently made unprecedented partisan appointments across various departments and directorates, which he described as being contrary to the spirit of the July uprising.
He also raised concerns regarding a resurgence of widespread irregularities and corruption by government associates across the country. The alliance will hold the protest rally at Paltan on Wednesday, 5 August, to press home these demands.
