BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged the public to disregard “rumours” concerning the potential resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Speaking to journalists on Friday following the inaugural session of the two-day Bengal Delta Conference 2026 at a city hotel, Fakhrul – who also serves as the minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives – dismissed the ongoing speculation and cautioned the public against being misled by unverified information.
Fakhrul’s remarks come in response to widespread speculation suggesting that the president might step down within a day or two, reportedly citing ill health.
Addressing the broader political climate, Fakhrul mentioned that while democracy faces various challenges globally, there remains a steadfast belief in the democratic process.
He added that the current government remains fully accountable to the citizenry and is dedicated to upholding democratic values and public accountability.
