The resurgence of survival horror continues as Silver Pines, an upcoming indie title inspired by genre classics, prepares for its official release later this year.
According to Screen Rant, the new game draws clear inspiration from iconic horror franchises such as Silent Hill and Alan Wake, arriving at a time when survival horror is enjoying renewed popularity. Recent projects including Cronos: The New Dawn and the return of established series such as Alien: Isolation reflect the genre’s growing momentum, driven in part by the lasting influence of Konami’s Silent Hill franchise.
Developed by Wych Elm, Silver Pines combines survival horror with a 2.5D Metroidvania side-scrolling format. The game also features a distinctive noir-inspired watercolour expressionist art style that sets it apart visually.
Like its inspirations, Silver Pines centres on the unsettling mystery of a small town steeped in folklore and psychological horror. While it avoids the surreal style associated with titles such as Twin Peaks and Alan Wake, it embraces a similarly atmospheric setting built around hidden secrets and mounting dread.
The game includes many traditional survival horror elements, including resource management, environmental puzzles and a cryptic narrative. Players will also encounter hand-written red-ink annotations on maps, reinforcing its mysterious tone.
The developer appears to acknowledge its influences through the game’s title as well. Much like Silent Hill and Alan Wake’s Bright Falls, Silver Pines adopts the familiar naming style popularised by Twin Peaks.
Silver Pines is scheduled to launch on Steam on 8 October. The release date places it just after the crowded September release window and on the same day as Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, another highly anticipated horror title. Despite the competition, the game is positioning itself as one of this year’s standout releases for fans of classic survival horror.
