The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has approved the implementation of Khan Academy Bangladesh programme in 100 secondary schools across seven districts, specifically designed to enhance the mathematics teaching skills of teachers and improve the learning outcomes of students.
The one-year initiative, which will remain active until 30 June 2027, is being implemented with the financial and technical assistance of the non-government organisation Sajida Foundation.
An official order from the DSHE on Thursday confirmed the approval for the project, which covers schools in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Chandpur, Cumilla, and Panchagarh.
Focus on mathematical proficiency
The core objective of the project is to eliminate students’ fear of mathematics through the effective use of Khan Academy Bangladesh digital platform. To achieve this, the programme will provide specialised training for mathematics teachers to upgrade their instructional techniques and ensure the platform is utilised to its full potential to boost student results.
In addition to teacher training, the initiative includes the installation of digital devices and providing technical support to schools to modernise the learning environment. Students will also benefit from special learning workshops and support sessions, with progress tracked through monthly monitoring and reporting.
Regulatory guidelines and oversight
The DSHE has established strict conditions for the programme’s execution, mandating that regular classroom activities must not be disrupted under any circumstances. The activities must not conflict with national or religious sentiments.
The selection of participating schools will be conducted with the assistance of District Education Officers and Upazila Secondary Education Officers, subject to final approval by the DSHE.
According to the directive, any modifications to the project or extensions of its duration will require prior permission from the Directorate.
Implementation will be regularly supervised by officials from the upazila, district, regional, and directorate levels, and the Sajida Foundation is required to submit quarterly and annual progress reports to the DSHE.
