The interim government has cancelled the observance of ‘New Bangladesh Day’ on August 8. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Advisory Council on Sunday, June 29.
The announcement was confirmed by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam through a post on his verified Facebook account. He wrote, “The Advisory Council has decided to observe July 16 as Martyrs’ Day and August 5 as Uprising Day. No special observance will take place on August 8.”
Earlier, August 8, was declared as ‘New Bangladesh Day’ marking the day of the formation of the interim government led by Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.
The administration had issued a circular instructing all relevant ministries, divisions, and agencies to observe the day with due importance each year.
The day was also listed under category ‘Kha’ of the Cabinet Division’s official roster for national and international observances. However, with the latest decision, all plans related to the celebration of the day have been dropped.
