A police couple has been arrested on charges of physically assaulting a domestic help at their residence in the Sonadanga Residential Area of Khulna.
The accused, Sanjoy Kumar Sarker and his wife, Popy Rani Saha, were both serving as Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) at Sonadanga Police Station.
According to police and local sources, the alleged abuse occurred on Wednesday afternoon after a pot of curry accidentally slipped from the hands of domestic help Milon Das,25, while she was preparing a meal.
Investigators said the victim was physically assaulted and sustained burn injuries caused by a hot frying pan.
The incident came to light when local residents reportedly witnessed the abuse through a window and informed human rights activists before calling the national emergency service 999.
Police responded to the emergency call and rescued the victim from the residence.
She was subsequently provided medical treatment and transferred to a Victim Support Centre for further assistance and protection.
The victim’s mother, Minati Rani, later filed a case with Sonadanga Police Station, accusing the couple of torture and abuse.
On Thursday, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) Md Humayun Kabir confirmed the arrests, saying both suspects had been taken into custody following the filing of the case.
ASI Sanjoy has been produced before the court, while his wife Popy Rani is currently being held in the prison cell at Khulna Medical College Hospital, police said.
