Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has announced plans to develop Cox’s Bazar, Jashore, Rajshahi, and Saidpur airports as international gateways.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to transform Bangladesh into a regional aviation hub and boost international trade and connectivity through integrated development of the civil aviation sector.
In his budget speech, Khosru outlined an ambitious plan to position Bangladesh as a leading aviation hub in South and South-East Asia by 2034. Central to this vision is the establishment of a National Air Connectivity Grid.
In addition, the international airports in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet are set to be upgraded into comprehensive logistics and passenger hubs. He confirmed that the government has signed a contract with Boeing to procure 14 modern aircraft to support the expansion.
Infrastructure developments include the imminent commencement of operations at the Third Terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, which has already received technological upgrades including a Wi-Fi network covering approximately 94,000 square metres.
The government is also modernising cargo management and passenger services for Biman Bangladesh Airlines while expanding its international flight network.
Beyond aviation, the government aims to raise the tourism sector’s contribution to GDP to 6–7 per cent. A large-scale tourism master plan is underway, including an investment roadmap designed to attract international tourists and generate significant employment opportunities.
