India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will be allowed to have his parents accompany him on overseas tours, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said on Sunday, a day after the 15 year old received his first senior international call up.
Sooryavanshi was named in India’s T20 squad for the tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games, following a remarkable Indian Premier League season.
The young opener is currently in Sri Lanka with the India A team for a tri nation series.
“His father will be flying down to Sri Lanka today,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told AFP.
“Also, if his parents want to go to England and Ireland with him, then we will make arrangements for their travel. They would be his best support system.”
India, the reigning T20 world champions, will play Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28 before beginning a five match series against England on July 1.
The Asian Games will take place in Japan in September and October.
Sooryavanshi earned his place in the national side after a stunning IPL campaign with Rajasthan Royals. The left hander scored 776 runs and finished as the tournament’s highest run scorer.
He hit one century and five half centuries during the season. He also won the Orange Cap, the most valuable player award and the emerging player award.
The teenager is now set to become India’s youngest international cricketer. He would break the record held by batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut at the age of 16 in 1989.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Sooryavanshi’s performances left the selectors with little choice.
“With his performances, he has almost forced us to pick him,” Agarkar said.
“Like everyone else that has watched T20 cricket in India, we have got high hopes of him. I think he just has picked himself.”
