Folk singer Kamruddin Absar dies at 79

Prominent folk and protest singer Kamruddin Absar died on Saturday night while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka, family members confirmed. He passed away at around 9:30pm on May 30 after a prolonged illness.

According to family sources, Absar had been suffering from health complications for many years. He suffered a stroke in 2011 and had since been receiving treatment at home.

His condition deteriorated recently after he contracted pneumonia and influenza. He was admitted to hospital on May 14 and had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Arrangements have been made for the public to pay their respects on Monday. His body will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, where tributes will be received from 10:30 am until noon.

His funeral prayer is scheduled to take place after Zuhr prayers at the Central Mosque of the University of Dhaka on the same day.

The death of Kamruddin Absar has cast a shadow of grief across the country’s cultural and political circles. Various progressive cultural and political organisations have expressed deep sorrow at his passing and extended condolences to his bereaved family.

Absar was widely recognised as a leading figure in Bangladesh’s folk and protest music movement and remained an influential voice in the country’s cultural landscape throughout his career.
