A grim week in the capital has seen the recovery of ten bodies from various locations between 26 May and 31 May, according to police reports.
The deceased were handed over to their respective families following post-mortem examinations conducted at Dhaka Medical College.
A significant number of the fatalities were reported as suspected suicides. On the evening of 26 May, the hanging body of Mamunur Rashid (35), a corporate employee, was recovered from the second floor of a residence in the Darogabari area of South Badda.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Yusuf of Bhatara Police Station noted that the victim allegedly took his own life due to family feuds.
In Jatrabari, police recovered the body of Sraboni Akter Poly (28), a housewife, from her home in Matuail Thakurbaria on 27 May. SI Awlad Hossain of Jatrabari Police Station stated in the inquest report that she had committed suicide following a disagreement with her husband.
Tragedy also struck at the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex in Panthapath on 27 May, where a student named Sourav (27) died after jumping from the seventh floor.
Sourav was a student at a private educational institution in Uttara. OC Kyashenu Marma said that at approximately 4:45 pm, he fell from the seventh floor inside the shopping complex. CCTV footage suggests that the incident is being treated as a suspected suicide.
The OC added that Sourav’s mobile phone broke upon impact. His SIM card was subsequently inserted into another phone to inform his family. The student’s home is in Bogra Sadar Upazila.
On 28 May, several more deaths were recorded. Abdullah (24) was found hanging in a house in East Rampura around 9:30pm. Rampura Police Inspector Subrata Paul cited financial crisis and unemployment as the reasons behind the suicide.
Earlier that morning, at 7am, SI Russel Parvez confirmed the recovery of an unidentified vagrant (50) from the pavement in front of Dhaka University’s Salimullah Muslim Hall.
The day also saw the accidental death of a two-year-old child named Ayonti in Demra. She fell into the water of a cultivated field near her home in Mendipur Aman Market at approximately 2pm and was declared dead upon arrival at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On 29 May, three more fatalities were reported:
Monir Gazi (24), a Foodpanda rider, was found hanging in the Solmaid Darjibari area of Bhatara at noon. SI Zahidul Islam handled the recovery.
In Solmaid Bepari Bari, the body of Purnima Akter (25) was recovered at 7pm SI Md Yaur Rahman stated that Purnima was allegedly strangled to death by her husband following a domestic dispute, after which the suspect fled with their young child.
In Kamrangirchar, rickshaw puller Enamul alias Suman (25) was found hanging at 9pm in West Ashrafabad, a fact confirmed by SI Braja Kishore Paul.
The final report involved Shakil Hossain (16), a packaging factory worker in Demra’s Dogair Paschimpara. SI Ahsan Habib noted that Shakil reportedly committed suicide by hanging following a family dispute regarding a romantic relationship.
