The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has launched a large-scale operation to remove waste from sacrificial animals following Eid-ul-Adha celebrations across the port city.
The cleaning activities officially began from 2pm on Thursday, shortly after the completion of animal sacrifices in different parts of the city. CCC cleaning workers were seen actively collecting and transporting waste using nearly 400 vans and 41 dump trucks across all 41 wards.
After offering Eid prayers, CCC Mayor Shahadat Hossain personally visited different areas of the city to supervise the waste removal activities.
CCC Deputy Chief Conservancy Officer Pranab Kumar Sharma said the corporation had deployed 379 vehicles, including dump trucks, pay loaders and waste-carrying vans, to ensure quick removal of sacrificial waste.
To streamline operations, the city’s 41 wards have been divided into northern and southern zones. Waste collected from 22 wards in the northern part of the city is being transported to the Arefin Nagar landfill site, while waste from 19 wards in the Patenga-Bandar area is being dumped at the Halishahar landfill.
“We hope to complete the removal of sacrificial waste within the stipulated time,” he said.
Visits to different neighbourhoods showed cleaners collecting animal remains from roads, alleys and residential areas before loading them onto waste vehicles. In many places, residents were also seen washing bloodstained streets with water and sprinkling bleaching powder to maintain hygiene.
Ward-based cleaning operations are being carried out under the supervision of zone officers, supervisors and conservancy workers in coordinated efforts across the city.
The CCC has set a target of completing the entire citywide cleaning operation within six hours. The campaign formally commenced from the Secondary Transfer Station (STS) area in front of the Kazir Deuri Biman office.
Mayor Dr. Sahadat Hossain urged residents to cooperate with the city corporation in maintaining cleanliness during Eid-ul-Adha.
“If sacrificial waste is left unattended, there is a risk of spreading diseases and germs. Adequate bleaching powder has been supplied for sanitation purposes,” the mayor said.
He also said the corporation had launched awareness campaigns encouraging residents to slaughter sacrificial animals at designated spots in each ward and dispose of waste properly using polythene bags supplied by the CCC before leaving them at specified collection points.
