A sudden attack by a buffalo at a sacrificial cattle market in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur has left two people dead after they were injured and later died while undergoing treatment.
One victim died on Sunday night at Dewanganj Upazila Health Complex, while another died on Monday night at Jamalpur General Hospital.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon at the Sanandabari sacrificial cattle market under Char Amkhawa union in Dewanganj upazila.
The deceased were identified as Majibur Rahman, 55, of Char Madar village in Sanandabari area and Ruhul Amin, 58, of Koraidangipara village under Jawniar in Rajibpur upazila of Kurigram.
Police and local sources said a trader from Akandpara village in Dewanganj brought several buffaloes to the Sanandabari cattle market for sale. After being tied at the market, one buffalo suddenly became aggressive, broke its rope and turned violent. It then ran across the market and started attacking people indiscriminately.
The sudden rampage created panic among buyers and sellers, forcing people to run in all directions. At least six people were injured in the attack, including Ruhul Amin and Majibur Rahman.
Locals rescued the injured and took them to Dewanganj Upazila Health Complex. Ruhul Amin died there that night while under treatment. Majibur Rahman was later shifted to Jamalpur General Hospital in critical condition, where he died on Monday night.
Dewanganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain confirmed that they received reports of two deaths caused by the buffalo attack at the cattle market.
