Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed female Members of Parliament (MPs) to prepare themselves to play an effective role in the National Parliament.
The instructions were given during a meeting with MPs from the reserved seats for women on Monday at the Secretariat, according to PM’s press wing.
Addressing the MPs, Tarique Rahman urged the MPs to develop themselves as competent lawmakers by having a clear understanding of the Rules of Procedure of the National Parliament. He also urged them to exercise caution and responsibility when delivering speeches in the House.
The meeting, held at the Cabinet Division’s Public Administration conference room within the prime minister’s office, included discussions on parliamentary working methods, the current political situation, and the implementation of the government’s election pledges.
Out of the 36 female MPs in attendance, 17 spoke at the session.
The press wing noted that the prime minister also instructed the MPs to remain vigilant against attempts to mislead the public through the misinterpretation of religion. He called on the female legislators to increase public engagement within their constituencies.
Reflecting on the political landscape, the Tarique Rahman said the people had endured 17 years of “mental agony” during which they were unable to speak freely. He added that since the BNP government assumed power, citizens have been enjoying all forms of democratic rights.
The session was attended by BNP Secretary General and Minister for Local Government Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Senior Joint Secretary General and Political Adviser to the Prime Minister Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Currently, 50 of the 350 seats in the National Parliament are reserved for women, with the BNP holding 36 of those seats.
