Their mother, Salma Akter, 32, is currently being treated with 60 percent burns. Doctors have described her condition as critical.

The tragic incident took place around 7am last Sunday in a residence near the Gram Bangla Tower in the Giridhara area of Fatullah, Narayanganj.

According to Md Hasan, a neighbour who helped rescue the family, a loud explosion was heard, and locals rushed to find the house engulfed in flames.

Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion was caused by gas accumulating in the kitchen from a leak.
Md Arman, Salma Akter’s younger brother, explained that the accident occurred as Abul Kalam was preparing to go to the vegetable warehouse.

“He went to the kitchen to heat up the previous day’s curry. As soon as he struck a match to light the stove, the explosion occurred,” Arman said.

The family hails from different districts; Abul Kalam was originally from Balukdiye village in the Bauphal Upazila of Patuakhali, while Salma Akter is from Pashchim Khudrakathi village in the Babuganj Upazila of Barishal
