BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Tuesday that the government should ensure that no form of mob violence or extrajudicial punishment is repeated in Bangladesh.
After paying homage to former president Ziaur Rahman at his shrine, he said that people want to regain their dignity, safety, and the right to vote freely after 15 years of oppression.
“People want to live with dignity, with security, and free from fear,” Rizvi said, calling upon the interim government that no illegal acts—like setting houses on fire or public harassment—are allowed to happen again.
Rizvi alleged that the 2014, 2018, and 2024 elections were held to serve ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s will, not the people’s.
He blamed former chief election commissioners—Rakib Uddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda, and Kazi Habibul Awal—for rigging elections in favour of the ruling party and demanded they be held accountable.
He also claimed that voters’ choices were ignored and only those preferred by Sheikh Hasina were declared winners.
“They are responsible for betraying the voters’ will, and they must be held accountable,” Rizvi added.
