Five people were killed and at least 10 others injured in three separate road accidents on the Cox’s Bazar-Chittagong highway within an hour this morning, police said.
The accidents occurred between 8am and 9am on Tuesday in the Harbang and Malumghat areas of Chakaria, and the Chunti area of Lohagara in Chattogram.
Motorcycle-bus collision in Harbang
Chiringa Highway Police In-Charge Md Ariful Amin said a passenger bus heading from Cox’s Bazar to Chittagong collided head-on with a motorcycle around 8am, approximately 200 metres north of Harbang Bazar.
Motorcycle rider Md Mizanur Rahman (32), a resident of North Kaliaish area in Satkania Upazila, Chattogram, was critically injured and declared dead upon arrival at Chakaria Upazila Health Complex, the police official said.
Bus-covered van collision in Malumghat
At the same time, a head-on collision between a bus and a covered van in the Malumghat area claimed the life of Md Yusuf, son of Munshi Mia from the Chandgaon area of Chittagong. At least five others were injured in that accident, said SI Md Zia Uddin of Malumghat Highway Police Station.
Investigations are underway to determine the causes of both accidents, said police officials Ariful Amin and Mahabubur Rahman.
Microbus falls into ditch in Chunti
At around 9am, three people were killed when a microbus fell into a ditch after the driver lost control on the highway in the Chunti Jangalia area of Lohagara Upazila. At least five others were critically injured.
Station Officer of Lohagara Fire Service Mohammad Fahim Khan said the microbus first hit a tree after the driver lost control before falling into the ditch.
In-Charge of the Mobile Team of Dohajari Highway Police SI Ruhul Amin told TIMES of Bangladesh that one of the deceased has been identified as Labre Ang Marma (26). Police are working to identify the other two victims.
Eyewitnesses said the black microbus was travelling from Cox’s Bazar towards Chittagong when the driver lost control due to excessive speed.
Injured victims have been sent to various hospitals, and legal procedures are underway to hand over the bodies to their families, police said.
