Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast that a moderate heatwave may sweep through vast regions of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, and Barishal divisions from Tuesday until 26 April.
Maximum daytime temperatures in districts including Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Natore, Pabna, Bogura, Kushtia, Meherpur, Jhenaidah, Chuadanga, Jashore, Magura, Narail, Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Gopalganj, Rajbari, Faridpur, Tangail, Narayanganj, Madaripur, Chandpur, Cumilla, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalokati, Rangamati and Khagrachhari, as well as surrounding areas, are expected to hover between 36°C and 39°C.
Analysis of the weather patterns indicates that the mercury could climb to 40°C in one or two locations within the Khulna and Rajshahi divisions.
A special alert has been issued for the public to avoid the risk of heatstroke during this period of intense heat. To mitigate health risks, the following guidelines have been advised:
- Avoid the midday sun: Stay indoors or in relatively cool places, particularly from 12pm to 3pm, instead of remaining outside in the harsh sunlight.
- Drink sufficient water: Consume plenty of water to keep the body hydrated; however, refrain from drinking excessively cold water from the refrigerator.
- Risk of heatstroke: Avoid working or staying in the sun for prolonged periods, as high temperatures can cause the body to lose water rapidly, increasing the likelihood of falling ill.
