Yash-starrer Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is getting a shorter English-language cut in Indian cinemas, with the new version running about 17 minutes less than the Indian-language theatrical release. The English version is set to hit select theatres across India on 4 September, more than a week after the film’s original release.
News18 Showsha gave Toxic three stars in its review, describing the film as excessive, moody, violent and ornate, while noting an undeniable pulse beneath its smoke, blood and swagger. The review also praised Geetu Mohandas for shaping the gangster drama around themes of inheritance, desire, rage, power and the sins passed from one generation to another.
According to India Today, the Indian-language version currently running in theatres has a runtime of 3 hours, 14 minutes and 12 seconds. The new English cut runs for 2 hours and 57 minutes. That makes it more than 17 minutes shorter than the Indian-language version. The English version had already released overseas on 26 August.
The makers have not revealed which portions they removed or shortened. However, unconfirmed reports suggest that Kiara Advani’s Tabaahi song could be among the cuts. There is no official confirmation of its removal. Reports have also mentioned Madhosh as a possible cut, but that too remains unconfirmed.
Toxic arrived in theatres on 26 August. The film follows a gangster caught between loyalty, morality and his search for redemption in post-independence Goa, where violence and jealousy shape his world.
Yash leads the film, which also stars Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth in key roles.
The official plot describes a gangster navigating loyalty, morality and personal redemption in a Goa marked by violence and jealousy. It explores the price of love and the struggle to find redemption through an atmospheric world, brutal action and morally conflicted characters.
The film has received mixed reviews. News18 Showsha awarded it three stars, calling it an uneven but fascinating film with a strong pulse beneath its excessive style. The review said Mohandas goes beyond a conventional gangster drama to explore inheritance, desire, rage, power and the sins that quietly pass from one generation to another.
Toxic has also crossed the Rs 320 crore mark worldwide. India Today reported its worldwide gross at around Rs 322 crore as of 3 September.
