Eid shopping has gained momentum in the northern border town of Dinajpur as crowds of buyers throng shopping centres and roadside stalls ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

From large shopping malls to footpath markets, the city is witnessing a surge of shoppers throughout the day.

However, traders say the shopping pattern this year differs slightly from previous years.

Many residents who usually travel to neighbouring India for Eid shopping were unable to do so due to visa complications, prompting them to rely on local markets.

A visit to Malda Patti, Jail Road and Bahadur Bazar areas in Dinajpur town showed brisk trading from morning until late at night.

Large showrooms in Malda Patti are witnessing heavy demand for women’s sarees and three-piece dresses.

Traders said Pakistani dresses have become particularly popular among young women this season.

Garment shops along Jail Road are also crowded, with children’s colourful outfits drawing strong demand.

Despite the festive rush, many shoppers have expressed concern over rising prices.

Several buyers complained that clothing prices have increased by Tk500 to Tk1,000 compared with last year.

One customer said a dress that previously cost Tk1,200 is now selling for Tk2,500, making it difficult for middle- and lower-income families to manage their Eid budgets.

Traders, however, said the prices are reasonable considering the quality of fabrics and current market conditions.

They added that sales were relatively slow at the beginning of Ramadan but have picked up significantly in recent days as Eid approaches.

Dinajpur residents traditionally travel across the border for shopping, but visa difficulties this year have disrupted that practice.

With a wide range of local and imported clothing available in city markets, many shoppers are now completing their Eid purchases at home.
