The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that no telephone conversation took place regarding a letter sent by the opposition leader recommending an adviser for foreign affairs, refuting a newspaper report suggesting otherwise.
According to a ministry statement issued Wednesday, Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan, acting as Foreign Affairs adviser to the opposition leader, sent a letter electronically to the foreign minister on 22 February on behalf of the opposition leader. He later handed over the same letter directly to the foreign minister.
The letter, written on the Opposition Leader’s National Parliament letterhead, sought the appointment of Dr Hasan as “Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Opposition Leader” with the status of adviser or minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In his signed letter, the opposition leader praised Dr Hasan’s expertise, professionalism, and prudence, recommending him for the position to advance the country’s foreign policy collectively. He requested the foreign minister to give special consideration to the matter.
The ministry stated that only the opposition leader’s signature appears at the bottom of the letter, and if he provides written consent, the full text will be made public.
The statement came in response to a newspaper report claiming that “Jamaat directly contacted the Foreign Minister by phone” and that “the Ameer of Jamaat was not aware of the said letter.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically stated that “no such phone conversation took place.”
