A writ has been filed with the High Court seeking to declare President Mohammad Shahabuddin’s oath-taking as illegal on the grounds of him holding dual citizenship.

The writ also demands an investigation into crimes against humanity by the president, along with Sheikh Hasina, due to his “silent” role during the July uprising.

The writ was filed with the relevant branch of the High Court on Monday. A hearing on the matter may take place before a dual bench of the High Court on Tuesday.

Earlier, on 25 February, a legal notice was sent to the Parliament Secretariat and the Law Secretary seeking the removal of President Mohammad Shahabuddin and the appointment of a new president according to the constitution. Supreme Court lawyer Barrister ASM Shahriar Kabir sent this notice.

The notice stated that President Md Shahabuddin violated his oath by making recent statements disrespecting July. During his tenure, the 12th parliamentary election, referred to as the “dummy election”, was held in 2024.

Under these circumstances, he has violated his oath. Therefore, lawyer Barrister Shahriar sent that legal notice to the Parliament Secretariat and the Law Secretary to remove him and appoint a new President to inaugurate the first session of the 13th parliament. When asked by Times whether a writ could be filed against the President, he said that Shahabuddin took oath as president concealing information about his dual citizenship, and here the individual Shahabuddin has been made the respondent.
