Health Minister Sardar Md Shakhawat Hossain on Sunday urged young doctors to stay away from politics and devote themselves to studies and research in the greater interest of the nation.
He made the call while speaking as chief guest at a programme held at Shaheed Abu Sayeed International Convention Centre.
Citing a survey, the minister said 81 percent of students believe political involvement disrupts their education.
He urged teachers not to pressure students into political activities and instead encourage research and academic excellence and said learning in the medical profession is a lifelong process and advised practitioners to combine professional competence with humanity.
“Patients must be treated with compassion and good behaviour,” he said. “You must prepare yourselves in such a way that patients do not need to go abroad for treatment.”
He assured support for a proposed 66-acre project for Bangladesh Medical University, along with plans to establish molecular laboratories, modern libraries and residential hostels for medical residents.
Speaking as special guest, M A Muhit said the government aims to ensure quality healthcare for the public and that new residents will play a key role in achieving that goal.
In his presidential address, Bangladesh Medical University Vice Chancellor Md Shahinul Alam said specialist doctors have a responsibility to ensure advanced treatment and lead research initiatives.
He stressed the importance of gaining expertise in artificial intelligence and robotics in medical science.
Expressing concern over the economic burden of treatment, the vice chancellor said many patients fall below the poverty line each year due to medical expenses and called for efforts to ensure advanced care at lower cost.
Doctors Association of Bangladesh President Harun Al Rashid and Secretary General Md Zahirul Islam Shakil were present at the event.
The programme concluded with the vice chancellor administering the oath to newly appointed residents.
