Bangladesh’s universities are quietly undergoing an AI-driven transformation; but rules, ethics, and oversight are struggling to catch up.
From lecture halls to dorm rooms, artificial intelligence is fast becoming embedded in everyday academic practice. What began as a supplementary tool for language correction and idea generation has evolved into a central component of how many students research, write and revise their work.
Across campuses, students openly discuss their use of AI platforms to draft assignments, summarise readings and prepare for examinations. For some, the technology functions as a digital assistant – generating outlines, simplifying complex theories and even producing full essays within seconds. Under time pressure, others admit relying heavily on AI-generated content before editing or paraphrasing it for submission.
A survey conducted by TIMES among students from nine universities indicates that the practice is widespread. Of 35 respondents, 29 said they use AI tools for assignments and presentations, while 24 described them as helpful for rapid exam preparation. Sixteen respondents stated that they primarily use AI to gather ideas before composing their own work, suggesting varying degrees of dependence.
The findings also reveal a growing perception gap. Nearly a quarter of respondents believe lecturers cannot easily detect AI-assisted writing, raising questions about academic integrity and the credibility of assessment systems.
Students describe AI as particularly useful for breaking down complex material into simpler language. Some reported using one platform to gather research and another to “humanise” the text. While several emphasised the importance of verifying references, others acknowledged that, in practice, fact-checking is not always rigorous.
Academics, meanwhile, are divided between cautious acceptance and concern. Some argue that banning AI outright would be unrealistic, given its global integration into professional life. Instead, they advocate reframing assessments to emphasise analytical depth, originality and in-class evaluation.
However, concerns remain over accuracy, over-reliance and the erosion of critical thinking. AI systems are known to generate instant but occasionally incorrect information, making verification essential. There are also emerging worries about data privacy, particularly as students input personal research topics and unpublished work into third-party platforms.
At the policy level, Bangladesh is still in the early stages of response. The government’s Draft National Artificial Intelligence Policy 2024 references AI literacy, data protection and the development of local-language tools, but there is as yet no comprehensive regulatory framework governing AI use in classrooms or examinations. Universities largely operate without unified institutional guidelines.
International observers have noted similar challenges worldwide. Analysts have recommended embedding AI ethics into curricula, strengthening teacher training and investing in digital infrastructure to ensure equitable access. Without such measures, experts warn, the digital divide between institutions and students could widen.
Private education technology platforms in Bangladesh have already begun integrating AI-powered services into lesson planning and content development. While this signals innovation, it also highlights disparities in technological readiness between urban private institutions and under-resourced public or rural campuses.
The broader question now confronting policymakers and educators is not whether AI should be part of education, but how it should be governed. Used responsibly, it has the potential to personalise learning, improve efficiency and enhance accessibility. Used uncritically, it risks undermining academic standards and weakening students’ independent analytical capacity.
As artificial intelligence moves from novelty to norm, Bangladesh’s higher education system faces a defining test: whether it can adapt its ethics, regulations and pedagogy quickly enough to ensure that technological progress strengthens – rather than compromises – the foundations of learning.
