Tajul Islam, the outgoing chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), has denied allegations of turning state witnesses in exchange for money.
He said, “I challenge anyone to show even a shred of evidence to support the allegations made against me. Every step taken by me and the prosecution team at the International Crimes Tribunal was transparent and lawful.”
He made these remarks in a statement sent to the media on Tuesday.
Earlier on Monday, the government removed Tajul and appointed Aminul Islam as the new chief prosecutor.
On the same day, another prosecutor, Sultan Mahmud, claimed in a Facebook post that Tajul had turned the chief prosecutor’s chair into a money-making machine. He alleged that Tajul had given concessions to accused individuals by making them state witnesses in exchange for money.
These allegations sparked various discussions and criticisms.
In this context, Tajul Islam issued a written statement in response to the allegations made against him.
He said, “These allegations are heinous lies, baseless, and have been made with the malicious intent of questioning the judicial process of the International Tribunal. These motivated allegations are completely false and unfounded.”
Tajul Islam claimed that a certain quarter is systematically spreading this propaganda to divert attention from the concluded and ongoing judicial processes against the fallen autocracy and the perpetrators of genocide, so that these trials cannot proceed further in any way.
He said, “No one had any opportunity to raise questions against me during my tenure. After my departure, certain quarters are making these baseless allegations to favor the perpetrators of genocide and are attempting to question the judicial process.”
Tajul Islam urged everyone to refrain from such lies and heinous conspiracies.
