A section of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) members paid tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement in the early hours of International Mother Language Day.
However, the event has triggered internal discord, with Ducsu executive member Sarba Mitra Chakma expressing resentment over the exclusion of several fellow representatives.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Sarba Mitra shared photographs of the wreath-laying ceremony, which featured members including Shadik Kayem, SM Farhad, and Mohiuddin Khan.
The post noted that those present were primarily individuals associated with Chhatra Shibir. Meanwhile, other Ducsu members, including Fatema Tasnim Juma, Sarba Mitra Chakma, Hema Chakma, and Umme Uswatun Rafia, were reportedly left out of the tribute.
Sarba Mitra claimed that they only became aware of the programme while watching the live broadcast on Bangladesh Television (BTV).
“Hema Chakma, Fatema Tasnim Juma, Sarbamitra Chakma, Rafia, Umme Salma and others – we learned through Bangladesh Television that Ducsu went to offer wreaths at the Shaheed Minar, haha!” the post read.
The tribute at the Central Shaheed Minar began at midnight, with President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paying their respects during the first hours of the day.
They were followed shortly after by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman. The specific group of DUCSU members was seen placing their floral wreath.
