In Chattogram’s Fatikchhari constituency, two candidates have withdrawn from the 12 February election, separately announcing their support for the BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islami candidates in the constituency.
On Tuesday afternoon, during a press conference, Rabiul Hasan Tanzim, the parliamentary candidate nominated by the Gono Odhikar Parishad with the truck symbol, announced his withdrawal from the election. He expressed his support for Sarwar Alamgir, the BNP-nominated candidate.
The press conference was attended by Shah Alam, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad’s Chattogram North District, Monirul Islam, senior vice-president, vice-presidents GM Osman, Md Soaib, and Md Yusuf, Salman Solaiman, president of the party’s Fatikchhari Upazila unit, and several BNP leaders.
Explaining his decision to withdraw, Rabiul Hasan Tanzim said that it was based on a political understanding between the BNP and the Gono Odhikar Parishad.
Earlier, on Monday night, Ahmad Kabir Karim, the independent candidate with the football symbol, announced his withdrawal from the election, expressing his support for Professor Nurul Amin, the Jamaat-e-Islami-nominated candidate.
Abdul Jabbar, secretary of Chattogram North District Jamaat-e-Islami, Upazila unit Ameer Nazim Uddin Imu, and other party leaders were present during the announcement.
Ahmad Kabir said, in consideration of greater interests, he voluntarily decided to withdraw from the election and called on his supporters to vote for the Jamaat candidate.
