At least three people were injured following an alleged attack on female activists of Jamaat-e-Islami during an election campaign in Meherpur. The incident took place on Saturday morning at Goharpur village in Pirojpur union.
The injured, identified as Ashraful Islam, Ansarul Islam, and Sohel Rana, were subsequently treated at a local clinic.
According to witnesses, the female Jamaat activists faced obstruction while campaigning in the village. It is alleged that Alehim, a BNP worker from the same village, barred them from campaigning. This led to an altercation between the two groups, which eventually escalated into a physical scuffle.
Ashraful Islam, one of the injured, alleged that they were attacked after protesting the obstruction of their peaceful campaign. He added that the injured workers were taken for medical treatment with the assistance of local residents.
Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Meherpur Sadar Police Station, stated that they have been informed of the scuffle between the two parties during the campaign.
He noted, however, that no written complaint has been filed regarding the incident so far. Legal action will be initiated once a formal complaint is received, the OC added.
