The High Court (HC) has rejected a petition filed by BNP-nominated candidate Md Abdul Gafur Bhuiya, preventing him from contesting the upcoming Comilla-10 (Lalmai-Nangalkot) parliamentary seat.
A bench of Justice Rajik-al-Jalil and Justice Md Anwarul Islam rejected the writ petition on Thursday.
The petition challenged the Election Commission’s cancellation of Gafur’s nomination due to dual citizenship, but the court upheld the commission’s decision.
Election Commission lawyer Fayzullah Faiz confirmed the ruling, stating that Gafur will not be eligible to participate in the election.
His candidacy was initially contested by Kazi Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui, a candidate of the Bangladesh Sangskritik Mukti Jote.
Following hearings on 18 January, the Election Commission ruled to cancel Gafur’s nomination, prompting him to file the High Court petition on 20 January.
With the court’s dismissal, Gafur Bhuiya is officially barred from participating in the upcoming parliamentary polls, leaving the BNP to reconsider its strategy in Comilla-10.
