The verdict in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area during the July–August uprising will not be delivered on Tuesday.
The International Crimes Tribunal‑1, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumdar, set 26 January as the new date for pronouncing the judgment. The tribunal passed the order around 11:30am.
The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired District and Sessions Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
However, the prosecution said the date was deferred because the verdict was not yet ready.
Former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman and seven others face charges in connection with the killings.
Four of the accused are former Shahbagh Police Station’s Officer‑in‑Charge (Operations) Md Arshad Hossain, Constable Md Sujon Mia, Constable Md Imaz Hossain Emon, and Constable Md Nasirul Islam. The four are currently in police custody.
The other four accused — former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Additional Deputy Commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, and former Assistant Commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul — remain fugitives.
The verdict will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), according to the prosecution.
The three‑member tribunal concluded hearings on the arguments on 24 December.
Defense lawyers Md Ziaur Rashid and Sifat Mahmud Shuvo represented the accused in custody, while state‑appointed counsel Kutubuddin Ahmed represented the four fugitives.
Prosecutors Mizanul Islam and Shahidul Islam Sarkar presented the case for the state.
According to case documents, on 5 August 2024, police opened fire on a peaceful student and public demonstration in Chankharpul, killing Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Junaid, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawladar, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Mia Shahrik.
The investigation agency submitted its 90‑page report on 20 April 2025. Formal charges were filed on 25 May, and the trial began on 14 July the same year. The prosecution examined 26 witnesses and presented its closing arguments on 15 December, seeking the maximum punishment, while the defense requested acquittal.
