A Rajbari court on Saturday sent two individuals, including a former district BNP leader, to jail for allegedly killing a fuel pump worker by running him over after refusing to pay for fuel.
The incident occurred in Rajbari Sadar upazila.
The accused have been identified as Abul Hashem Sujon (54) and his driver Md Kamal Hossain Sardar (43).
Sujon, a first-class contractor and the owner of the vehicle involved, is the former president of the Rajbari district unit of Juba Dal and former joint secretary of the district BNP.
The duo was produced before Rajbari Judicial Magistrate Court-1 on Saturday afternoon. After Kamal Hossain provided a confessional statement before Judge Md. Hasan, the court ordered both to be sent to jail.
The victim, Ripon Saha (32), was an employee at Karim Filling Station at Goalondo Mor, where he had been working for one and a half years. The incident occurred around 4:30 am on Friday.
According to the case details, two individuals arrived at the station in a jeep at approximately 4:15 am and took fuel worth 5,000 taka. When Ripon Saha requested payment, the primary accused, Abul Hashem Sujon, procrastinated.
Eventually, they attempted to drive out of the station without paying. When Ripon tried to stop the vehicle, he was run over and killed.
Following the incident, police arrested Sujon and Kamal and took them into custody. On Friday night, the victim’s younger brother, Protap Saha, filed a murder case at Sadar Police Station naming both men as accused.
Md Sahabuddin Khan, the investigating officer of the case, confirmed that Sujon and Kamal were produced in court for the murder of the pump employee. He noted that the driver, Kamal, gave a confessional statement to the magistrate before the court ordered their imprisonment.
