A local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed by miscreants who broke into his residence in the capital’s West Rajabazar area on Tuesday.
The deceased, Md Anwar Ullah, 65, was the vice-president of West Rajabazar Ward Committee under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar South Thana. A homeopathic physician by profession, he resided in a second-floor flat with his wife.
According to police and family sources, a group of miscreants entered the house by cutting the window grills between 2am and 5am on Tuesday. CCTV footage from the building showed two individuals entering the flat between 2:10am and 2:20am and exiting via the same route two hours later.
The victim and his wife were discovered by neighbours and relatives at noon with their hands and feet tied. While Anwar Ullah was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, his wife is currently receiving medical treatment.
Preliminary police investigations suggest the incident was a burglary, as the family reported that 8 bhori of gold and Tk5 lakh in cash were looted from the residence.
Anwar Ullah was originally from Laksmanpur village in Cumilla and was a father of three children.
Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka City North Ameer Mohammad Selim Uddin and Secretary Muhammad Rezaul Karim issued a joint statement strongly condemning the murder.
They demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers, noting that failure to ensure justice for such political figures would cause the public to lose confidence in the interim government.
The victim’s namaz-e-janaza was held on Wednesday afternoon at the West Rajabazar Mosque. His body was subsequently transported to his ancestral home in Laksam, Cumilla, for burial.
